Landscape design and swimming pool
construction are one of Richard's many
passions. Along with spending time with his
family, Richard loves the outdoors, playing
guitar in his band, and traveling. In the past
few years Richard has been involved in the
Boy Scouts of America where he proudly
served as a district executive. His work in the
landscape industry has lead him to work on
several award winning projects. Including the
avant-garde Tempe Transportation Center
and Scottsdale Community College's
"GeoWall". Early in his career Richard
started off as a high school teacher in
addition to teaching Medical Spanish at
Glendale Community College. As a
contractor and landscape and pool designer
Richard has found much enjoyment in
fulfilling the dreams of countless families in
the valley where he continues to beautify our
city one landscape and pool at a time.
Through a combination of zealous eagerness to create beautiful spaces and an unwavering commitment to doing
whatever it takes to get the job done right Sunwest has become one of the valley's mainstay landscape and pool
remodeling companies in in the valley of the sun. Tackling everything from the 3 story "green roof" atop the
Transportation Center light rail station to the "geo wall" at Scottsdale Community College Sunwest has continued to
enhance the valley in new and innovative ways since 1997.
Richard Larios was a high school teacher at Tempe High School in 1997 when he launched Sunwest to make extra
cash. The side business grew and Richard and his crew expanded to become a landscape company originally named
Complete Landscaping. Within a year the small but resilient landscape maintenance company began taking on
Sunwest's first big break came when a supervisor for a developer at a construction site for a new development in
Chandler noticed the team's hard work while installing a front yard. Sunwest was invited to work along side the
developer and bid on all the front yards for that development. Later that summer Complete Landscaping became
Sunwest Landscaping. The stage was set for Sunwest to shed all its maintenance contracts and specialize only on
landscape and pool renovations and new installations.
In 2003 Sunwest Landscaping focused primarily on residential outdoor living spaces and pool renovations. Sunwest
launched a new era in residential landscape construction. The backyard was no longer just a patch of grass and a
square concrete pad under the patio. Along with a handful of other creative companies in the valley,Sunwest ushered
in the era of outdoor kitchens, outdoor living rooms, and outdoor dining areas. The backyard had evolved. An era of
sustainable "green" construction was taking hold. Anything was possible in this new generation of backyards, and
everything was attempted and installed in yards like never seen before. The age of expansive outdoor kitchens, huge
lavish outdoor fireplaces, outdoor surround sound systems, synthetic grass, outdoor televisions, lavish waterfeatures
and consequently exotic "fire features" were popping up everywhere in the most unusual forms and styles imaginable.
Sunwest had found its niche.
From 2003 to 2007 Sunwest enjoyed its most prosperous and busiest period. The post 9-11 and pre Great Recession
years proved to be the years that established Sunwest as a company that was here to stay. It is during this time that
Sunwest was called upon to appear in the televison show Landscaper's Challenge on HGTV. Irene Larios also joined
the Sunwest family along with Jon Tencza, Chris Quintanar, Jesse Lugo and Erin Conner.
In 2008 with the Great Recession in full swing the steady flow of landscape jobs slowed. The country was experiencing
a near financial meltdown never seen before since the Great Depression. Thanks to a steady flow of commercial work
and residential renovation jobs Sunwest pressed on.
Today, Sunwest is back on top and continues the tradition of renovating pools and landscapes that embody creative
designs at a great value to our customers. In this day and age where every dollar counts, Sunwest is proud to offer our
customers the value, the quality, and the customer service that built the company in its early beginnings. Through the
years, the Sunwest team has remained constant, especially in our delivery of the principles that made this company
great from the start.
We are proud to be a family owned business and we treat every pool remodel and landscape renovation as if it was
our own. Many thanks to all our customers for making Sunwest #1.
